The second day of UBD Open Day 2012 has been really amazing! There were two awesome performances being done for today by the Nasyid Club and Fonemik Club. They were truly 'spectacular-istic'! Just so you know, UBDfm is having its quiz game during the day so do not miss this out if you wish to earn some beautiful goodies in courtesy from B-mobile. Also, good news to all of us that the PMUBD Cafe has revealed its secret attraction which is its own tasty lasagna and it tasted like O.M.G! There will be one day left to spare for the event so please do not let this chance pass by, bring your friends and families and get to know UBD :)

In addtition to that, we wish all of the members and committees of the UBD Open day 2012 to have a good rest tonight for tomorrow's final day occasion. This note is also goes to the lovely UBDfm crews, a big fat thank you to all of you for your hard work and to the rest of the people who have contributed so much to the success of the event. Therefore, do not get yourself overwork, alright? :)

Anyway guys, tonight's evening segment, entitled 'Success in life means money which means happiness' is brought to you with the notion of money-happy predicaments whereby the idea of happiness rises from money. There are so many arguments related to this content but despite of having different kinds of individualistic mind, money do possess an important role in our own life. However, to a certain extent, some people do really able to earn a successful life without money. For example, marriage wise, happiness is created.

One of the listeners, Angel Choo, stated that "i think the term 'success' varies with different people. most view success as earning big money. the more money you have, the more successful you are. i like how Bob Dylvan sees it, "A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do."".

This is a true logical believes that one must be filled with true hard work and commitment to earn good money in order to reach the status of 'happiness'. It is either by possessing a high-paid career or being creative to your life. Moreover, things that you love to do or dreams to achieve could also bring your life to a different path of earning happiness. It is up to each one of us to feel what happiness is all about, so, throughout the day, we experience values and things we do not know about which can bring about happiness, only you can explain the way how happiness works for you. :)

In conclusion to the context of tonight's title, it is really a matter of how you view your life to carve that smile on your face. Success is just a middle part of your life, it is a matter of how you begin with it that makes your achievements to happiness be worthwhile.

UBD Open Day hit it off at the Chancellor Hall today! For those who finished with their A-levels or want to pursue a post-graduate studies, this is your chance to find out what UBD has to offer. If you didn't have the chance to drop by this afternoon, there are two more days left for you to explore the programmes and researches available at UBD. The Open Day opens from 8am-4pm.

Apart from the faculty, admission and support booths, UBD also stages various extraordinary performances by UBD clubs such as Fonemik, Choir, Guling Tangan, Performing Arts and many more. Being said that UBD is not just about being intellectual but we drive individuals to be imaginative and creative.

Guess what? UBDFM is also available at the Chancellor Hall broadcasting live from the studio. This is your opportunity to meet the backbones and superstars of UBDFM too!

Talking about Performing Arts, tonight is all about drama and theater!

UBD offers modules that covers from literature to short film making such as Introduction to English Literature, Film & Literature, Theater Production, Literary Appreciation, Narrative Studies and the Media, Drama Skills for Effective Communication, Script Writing and Drama Studies.

Complimenting the modules available we have the Performance Arts Club, as mentioned, and the likes to give you proper training in the field of the acting, directing, producing, scriptwriting and basically back stage management. Being a literature student doesn't mean you will be a literature teacher or an actor. There are a lot of opportunities that you never thought it exist for arts, literature or drama students! To name a few; a manager, director, communication officer, designer and producer. Why? Because the modules like drama and theater production enables you to level up your charisma, confidence and management skills. With the ability to communicate and be confident, you are ready for the world!

Tonight we have societal quest with DJ Khalil and DJ Jaz, the topic was what we are shows we are or in malay terms cara pemakaian/ penampilan menunjukkan personaliti kita.

In Jaz's opinion, he says that people usually wear what their peers likes them to wear and goes on to say it's like "coins with two sides" which basically advise us not to base decision or opinion on one persons account or reflection. We have to listen both decisions before making own decision.

Khalil also gave his opinions that what we wear depends on the context of the situation and some shirts defines who we are. For example, Khalil usually wear hoodies therefore that defines who he is and what he likes to wear. Furthermore, he then talks about malay traditional wear and say that whichever alterations they make to their shirt it's still consider as malay traditional shirt.

What we wear is not limited and there are a lot of styles to try!

For tonight's session, Dj Wawa share recent news from local and international.

Following the death of Whitney Houston, Wawa expressed her professed love for the late singer. Like the rest of the world, she also shocked and deeply saddened by sudden death of the singer. Whitney, who famously having drug related problems, died today from drowning in the bathtub. Wawa, who had been a massive fan of Whitney, had also share her favourite song from the singer which is 'I have nothing'. In addition to that, she also advice everyone to stay away from drugs.

In another news, Wawa also congratulates Siti Nur Haliza, Malaysian singer, who had just launched SimplySiti at Paloma, the Mall this afternoon. Also, the score for the match between DPMM FC against the last season's S-League champion, Tampines Rivers, came to a draw in which both team scored two goals. Congratulations to DPMMFC for getting a point but as Wawa said, it's better to have a point, rather than nothing at all.

On behalf of UBDFM congratulations for those who scored well! It is time for you to narrow down your studies in preferred Universities and Form Sixth Centers. Choose that suits your interest and your abilities and not what others think you should do. Believe in yourself and be that person you want to be.

For those who didn't so well, do not let your hopes down. This is one of the trials in life you have to face. Bear in mind we have a lot of (good) paths to choose from. No matter how long the journey will take you, just don't give up because you will never know what you are capable of! Again, have faith in yourself.

On another note, UBD Open Day falls on the 16-18 February 2012 at the Chancellor Hall. So fresh graduates from A-Level who are eying on UBD, this is your place to be. Different faculties will cater your study of interest. Staff and volunteers will help you to understand the courses in depth. UBD enables you to experience the world of knowledge not just in Brunei but also in selected foreign countries.

Plus, it is also your chance to meet us because UBDFM will be there to pump up your mood. So don't be shy and do approach us. :D

Tonight's topic was 'Staying True To Yourself'. DJ Khalz and DJ Jaz was accompanied by DJ Iman from 8-11PM.

Highlights from Segment Love@Cinta:

Tonight’s segment explores the concept of ‘puppy love’ (Cinta Monyet) where Dj Wawa and Dj Iman asked the listeners to give their views on the topic.

Most of our responses on Facebook associate ‘Puppy Love’ with teenagers and infatuation. In other words, they believe that this kind of love does not really last long. Dj Wawa and Iman also further commented on the typical association of Puppy love and teenagers. The word ‘Puppy love’ is normally use as an expression or can be use as a form of sarcasm. It is also use to convey a not-everlasting love.

Throughout the segment as well, Dj Wawa and Dj Iman share some tips on having a much ever lasting love in which they share the tip to communicate with your partner. One of the tips shared by them is you had to compromise with your partner; agree on something both of you disagree; try to solve the problems together.

World AIDS Day 2011

In conjunction of the World AIDS Day celebrated every 1st December worldwide, Brunei Darussalam AIDS Council (BDAC) is conducting two very special events on the 11th of December 2011.

The Charity Duathlon Race 'Run 5km. Bike 50km. Run 50km' and the 'GETTING TO ZERO 5KM FUN RUN' are both open to the public.

Forms are available at Triple Star in Kiulap for $20.00 each and the categories for the race are:

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, the Japan Foundation and the Embassy of Japan are co-hosting a Japanese Traditional concert by the Hanamas as a token of appreciation towards Bruneians for their immense support during the earthquakes and Tsunami disaster.

Hanamas was awarded the Prize for Encouragement at the 1st Neo Classical International Competition in 2010.

Catching up with Aziz Harun on UBDFM!

In his Baju Cara Melayu, Aziz Harun came to UBDFM with his brother, Rahim, for an interview with DJ Zharfan and DJ Zurin on the Versus Show last Friday 16th September 2011. Along with his brother, they played a couple of songs including his upcoming single. Pre-interview and on-air he is actually shy and timid around us. He was nervous for it was the first time he had an interview. (But I also think it is the age gap. Haha). But then he showed his other side when he plays the guitar and fooled around the camera a bit. He turns out to be playful!

I first discovered Aziz Harun when RanoAdidas.com introduced him with his original track "Battle That We Never Won" with his brother Rahim years back. Truth to be told, I was mind blown knowing that he wrote a piece when he was just 11 years old!

Oh such shame for a 22 year old. I have never accomplished anything at such young age...Oh well, carry on!

Most of you now may have discovered him through Youtube, local radio stations, local TV and even competitions. Under the account of Jambul212, Aziz started off through Youtube where he uploaded a lot of cover tracks in English and Malay as well as his original singles. His first video was Bellaluna by Jason Mraz in 2008.

He sometimes feature his family in his covers which includes his sister, Tharwana; his brother, Rahim; and cousins and other artists who are equally brilliant in singing. His latest cover song features his sister Tharwana Harun – Suasana Hari Raya in Youtube.

Aziz started to sing when he was just 2 years old of which he also gained interest in playing guitar. Officially he learned the instrument when he was 6 years old. His family is a huge inspiration where his father and siblings love to sing and karaoke during their free time. Thus In fact his eldest sister, Shazwana, was in Bintang Kecil years ago. Following his sister's footsteps, he also joined Bintang Kecil and won himself an award in 2009. And because of his amazing talent, he was sent to Kuching and Singapore for competitions. He then won another award for Best Performance in Kuching.

To him, singing is just a hobby but deep inside he would like to go international one day. UBDFM and your fans have your full support Aziz! We wish you all the best of luck :)

UNIVERSITI Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and TelBru yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding to improve the broadcast of UBD FM over the Internet at The Core in UBD.

UBD Vice Chancellor Dato Paduka Dr Hj Zulkarnain Hj Hanafi and TelBruActing Chief Executive Officer Hj Umar Ali Hj Abdullah signed the agreement before Assistant Vice Chancellor (Corporate and Administration) of UBD Hjh Anis Faudzulani Hj Dzulkiflee and General Manager of TelBru Media and Communications Mohd Reeda Hj Malik.

"One of the projects we have identified is to do with UBD FM...to provide them a streaming server locally in Brunei to allow them to stream their broadcast much more faster and clearer," Mohd Reeda said in an interview with The Brunei Times.

However, he said UBD FM will not be doing radio broadcast due to limitations of ICT at the moment.

"So what we can do is basically to increase the bandwidth at which they are streaming so they get higher quality and people can listen to them on their mobile phones. But as far as FM radio broadcast, I think that will probably be some time before we can do that," he said, adding that UBD FM will be a "full-blown" station, but broadcasting over the Internet.

He added that UBD FM will be broadcast over a higher bandwidth "probably in the next month or so".

Hjh Anis Faudzulani said during the interview that the project will take UBD FM a step towards becoming an independent and more popular radio station.

"We would like them to become independent, still under UBD...with the advice and guidance from UBDand TelBru," she added.

Both Mohd Reeda and Hjh Anis Faudzulani said that an internship programme with TelBru , which will be open for students starting in January next year, will follow after the UBD FM.

Hjh Anis Faudzulani hopes that the MoU would provide a platform for both organisations to explore ways to promote educational and academic exchange through student internships, study opportunities in the forms of seminars, workshops and conferences.

On the side of TelBru, Mohd Reeda said that the MoU provides a "two-fold" advantage of exposing the telecommunication corporation to their future customers as well as future employees.

"For TelBru, we realise these students will graduate and they will get jobs, so they will be our future customers and we are trying to get their mind share while they are still in university and get them to see the branding is there," he said. "The other thing of course is talent spotting as well, so they could be our future employees as well."

He is hopeful that the MoU and internship programme would open the doors for opportunities for students to consider a career in the private sector.

They added that the MoU sought to achieve common objectives in line with the national vision ofWawasan Brunei 2035 to create a knowledge society.

"We are talking about the younger generation is operating within this whole memorandum understanding. That's the main goal...that we are producing the right kind of youth, holistic in the sense of academics," said Hjh Anis Faudzulani.

Mohd Reeda added that the MoU sought to ensure that the students will gain knowledge and experience to be "business-savvy" and "entrepreneurial".

"The university is expecting these people to become independent, in order to do that they need to be able to sustain some sort of revenue and in order to do that they need to be able to do business," he said.

UBDFM is a great platform for learners who plan to venture into national radio broadcast. Albeit the lack of facilities and equipment UBDFM is able to reach the public through the internet of which has higher (online) media consumers. Despite being a learning ground UBDFM is still capable to catch up the likes of other local broadcasters and giving its listeners the best quality given.

Nevertheless UBDFM also provides opportunity for its DJs and crew to develop skills in fields of leadership, communication, management and marketing. Hence equipping its members with abilities which can be put to use for their future employment.

We Gave Back to Save Lives.

As you all know Projek Brunei and UBDFM have collaborated to run the Give Back project in order to save lives of those in need. It is a cause that gather caring individuals by giving back to the society with blood donation.

The blood drive charity project was successfully held at the Core Residential College UBD on Tuesday, 19^th July, 2011 around 9am until 11am. 20 people 'Gave Back' to the society by donating their blood which was conducted by the Blood Bank staff, RIPAS Hospital.

The project leaders who were running behind the scene, Delwin (@Bruneitweet) from Projek Brunei with DJ Ami from UBDFM, also donated their blood in this event. Other notable donaters also came from our refreshment sponsors, Pondok Sari Wangi (@pondoksariwangi) and Mr. Baker Bakeshop (@Mrbakerbakeshop).

However despite the positive outcome, unfortunately some were unable to donate to medical reasons. Nevertheless we are grateful to receive such support from the society. We are looking forward for your continuous support in the near future.

As you all know, UBD FM is moving to the new studio at The Core since Monday night. Subsequently we have to go off air from 7pm last Monday until now. For the past few weeks we approached different companies to renovate the rooms and now it's furnished with modern furniture, carpet and blinds. Although most of our equipment are already set up we have yet to wait for the network to be installed before we resume on air.

Comparing to our previous venue, we have a smaller office functioning also as the lounge but a bigger studio. This will be efficient to hold talk shows, interviews and whatnot as people are able to move around freely. The studio will also be the best place to take pictures because of the themed walls. We have a stretched wall of glass so that outsiders can see how the DJs work their magic. However we have to hold the show until we can officially go on air. As of now the room is covered with blinders. With that, we are sorry that we can't provide pictures of the current studio and office. But perhaps we can let you visualize this; black, purple, silver, gray, comfy, cozy, romantic, modern and COLD! Yes, it's freezing cold in here! We have huge air-conditioners both in the small office and big studio. Albeit the temperature we are beyond happy to be settling down at our new home. We really can't wait to share this to the public because the place is fab!

So for now bear with us as this is also a good opportunity for us to organize and do maintenance in our system. Thus you can get a better experience listening to UBD FM.

On another note, there's a new convenience store called The Fresh Barn just next to the food court at The Core. It's about time we have one! It's quite convenient for students living at the residential college and hostels as they supply cooking oil, packets of french fries, sausages, canned food, toiletries, biscuits, ice creams and many more! Nevertheless it's open to public too. The store is open from am until 10pm.

Also that weekend itself, the UBD FM SMARTER Race and Bazaar was held. From the 25th to the 27th March, a myriad of activities, fun and games were organised and lots of great food outlets were set up at the UBD Sports Complex. All proceeds of the UBD FM SMARTER went to the SMARTER Brunei, so it was definitely WHOLESOME FUN for a greater cause.

The UBD FM SMARTER Race culminated on a Sunday, and it had a great turnout with all the 25 participating teams up for each and every action-packed challenge. Kudos of course to the volunteering clubs that helped prepare each and every AWESOME obstacles in the UBD FM SMARTER Race.

Once again, we'd like to congratulate the 1st Place winners of the UBD FM SMARTER Race - The A Team! 2nd Place Winners - Superfly, and Team Courage for placing third!

The awarding ceremony saw performances from the talented kids of SMARTER Brunei.

Not to forget, we'd like to thank artist Hill Zaini, bands Kamaloco, The Kidney Farm, A Band Once and Rika for the the amazing performances at the UBD FM SMARTER Bazaar.

And before this turns into a long essay, we're also proud to have interviewed local artist Nurul and the RBC Sous hef Yoshinobu Nakamura and Ivy Chong (Public Relations) for the Japanese Food Festival

So, that's about it for the backtracking. As for the new events coming up, well, we're proud to bring you back THINKING THOUGHTS. In collaboration with eBunda Cafe (BAG Networks), the session interview will discuss on the topic of 'Reality Online Business in Brunei, with focus in Women'. The discussion will be a panel between Farhanna Pura (Na-Forrer online boutique), Vicki Chong (Orchid Row) and Sharifah Robani Hussain Assagaf (Bunny Pablo), facilitated by Rozana Yunos from BAG Networks. Make sure you tune in to hear yet another intellectual discussion.

Hey folks! Our student-based radio station has decided we'll be giving you updates every now and then. Hopefully this shall suffice with telling you about the past events and giving you insights on occasions that will happen in the future - just in case you still haven't gotten enough of information and updates from our facebook fan page or twitter.

So, the past two weeks had been a WHIRLWIND of wonders for UBD FM (despite the busy academic schedule that we're all having prior to the end-of-semester examinations).

UBDfm was recently invited to the pre-event dinner by @BruneiTweet, one of the organisers of @TwestivalBrunei.

It was definitely ChowDown Challenge with sushi having different amounts of WASABI inside them.

Our very own DJ Angel emerged victorious with a record time of chowing down a plateful of sushi in less than two minutes.

Our student deejays and crews had the opportunity to mingle with the local Internet Personalities, renowned deejays from the local radio stations and other members of the media, who were present at the social gathering, too.

For those of you who have no idea on what the Twestival is about- well, it's an offline gathering of online twitter users, which was held globally on the 24th March 2011. Twestival was aimed for a cause and locally, Twestival Brunei's "Tweet. Meet. Eat and Give" supported the Children's Development Centre.

On the Twestival Event itself, UBD FM became the main radio station that covered the event with DJ Billy and DJ Rara as emcees. Just like the pre-event dinner, three of our UBDfm Deejays - Angel, Billy and Rara, were game for the Man vs Food Challenge. Everybody definitely screamed ice cream for a good cause.

Other than the Twestival Brunei, UBD FM was also busy advocating 2011's Earth Hour. Held on the 26th of March, UBD FM hosted an interview prior to the event.

Representatives from the non-profit organisation Earth Hour Brunei Azahar Yaakub and Rafidah HT were present at the studio to talk about the campaign against climate change with DJ Madison.

On the event itself, UBD FM Deejays and Crews were invited by The Brunei Hotel for their Earth Hour Celebration. The Earth Hour International Buffet Dinner was a mellow symbolic celebration with a UBD FM tree collecting Earth Hour pledges. Lastly, being committed to Earth Hour, UBD FM online stream was cut off from 8.30pm to 9.30pm that Saturday.

Racing to raise funds for Smarter (from The Brunei Times)

ONE hundred runners raced for an hour to complete as many obstacles as possible for the Smarter Brunei Charity Race hosted by the Universiti Brunei Darussalam's radio club yesterday morning.

Fadhilah Hj Yahya, one of the organisers for the "Smarter Race" said there were 25 teams of four people each.

The "Smarter Race", was aimed to raise funds for the group specialising in aiding autistic individuals. "Basically, this is something like an 'Amazing Race', around the university campus," she told The Brunei Times.

She noted the aspects of the race taken from the popular reality television programme, highlighting various obstacles set up throughout the campus.

However, there was no set course, and participants from each team were free to choose from the eight various checkpoints scattered throughout the university. Each team had to complete as many of those obstacles as possible within the allotted time of an hour.

Fadhilah said the obstacles varied in nature, and required both strength and intellect from the participants, and that the harder the obstacles, the more points would be awarded for its completion.

The A-Team won first place, while Superfly and Team Courage secured the second and third spots, respectively.

Nurul Nabilah, one of the racers, said before the start of the event that she was a bit nervous. "We have no idea what will be in store for us," she told The Brunei Times.

"I am racing because I want to sweat for a good cause, and I know the money I contribute by participating will go to Smarter."

She said one of her family members has autism, "Even though he is a little kid, I am scared sometimes because he can get very aggressive. But in the end, I don't mind, and I hope to understand him better."

Various organisations also participated in setting up a variety of obstacles. Just behind the university's Central Lecture Theatre, the local Parkour association set up an obstacle course.

Brunei Scouts Association also set up their obstacles in the Bamboo garden, and another few minutes in the opposite direction was the Brunei Darussalam Aids Council's dance-a-long, which if failed, resulted in a costly penalty 'blind-maze' game.

There was also the Charity Bazaar, which aimed to raise funds for Smarter, with a portion of participating vendor's proceeds going towards the centre's operational cost.

"We heard about Smarter's need for funds, so we decided to take the opportunity to give back to the community," said Vice-Student Director of UBDFM Khairunnisa Ash'ari. "We hope to also raise awareness of Smarter itself, of what they do." The Brunei Times

Last night at exactly 8.30pm, The Brunei Hotel joined the nation in celebrating Earth Hour by turning off some non-essential lights. But in following this year's theme, "Beyond the Hour", the lights were switched off for a total duration of not one, but two hours, right up till 10.30pm.

Some students from the university-based radio station UBD FM were also invited to join the Earth Hour celebration at The Brunei Hotel.

According to MD Kamarredzawan (DJ Ridd) from the Faculty of Arts and Social Studies, UBD, the students were delighted to receive the invitation. For the Earth Hour event, they provided an "Earth Hour Pledge Tree" on which hotel guests could sign and write some motivating words to mark the occasion.

In going beyond the hour, The Brunei Hotel had appointed staff from each of its departments to monitor and observe energy usage during their operations.

Guests at the celebration were also entertained to live acoustic performances from Mojo Blues, Country Roads and a local band known as "5:10am". The guests also had the opportunity to "dine in" with the International Candle Light buffet dinner at Choices Restaurant at The Brunei Hotel.

The Brunei Hotel is showing its commitment towards preserving the environment by not only conserving energy but also by supporting the "Go Green" programme, in which guests can opt out from having their linens washed on a daily basis.

Furthermore, with the appointment of its own Green Team, the hotel has pledged to go beyond its existing programme and beyond the Earth Hour. Borneo Bulletin

Earth Hour Global Campaign AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE!

More than 4,000 cities in 131 countries will turn off their lights for 1 hour Saturday to mark a global Earth Hour event, a conservation group says.

Lights at about 750 major landmarks also will be switched off.

The World Wide Fund for Nature said the initiative traces its origin back to Australia in 2007 when businesses and residents in Sydney turned off their lights for 1 hour to make a statement about energy use and global warming, RIA Novosti reported Friday.

Organized annually by the WWF for the last Saturday in March, "Earth Hour is your chance to vote for Earth by shutting down your lights between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. your local time," the WWF said on its Web site.

"This year, Earth Hour asks people to commit to the event, big or small, for the coming year, taking Earth Hour beyond the hour," said Andy Ridley, co-founder and executive director of Earth Hour.

TWEET, MEET, EAT AND GIVE

TWESTIVAL BRUNEI – In support of the Child Development Center, proudly supported by Swensens and Kitaro Japanese Restaurant, Brunei.

Twestival (or Twitter Festival) Brunei will take place on 24 March 2011 at Swensens, The Mall, Gadong from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. This evening of social media events aims to raise funds and awareness for a good cause and is a part of the official Twestival global event via the social media platform, Twitter. Across the world on the same day, Twestivals armed with the same aim will take place. In Brunei, our good cause is the Child Development Center.

Under the Ministry of Health, a community-based rehabilitation centre known as the Child Development Centre (CDC) was formed in 1999. The primary objective of the CDC is to provide diagnosis, assessment, treatment and support for special needs children, to help them achieve optimal health as well as social and educational development. Referrals to the CDC are from various sources including specialist pediatrics and neonatology clinics, primary care sources, other clinical specialties, schools and by self-referrals. Following detailed assessment and confirmation of diagnosis, these children will be referred for specific therapy programmes.

Twestival Brunei aims to raise funds from the proceeds of ice cream and kid meals sales at Swensens, The Mall, Gadong from Sunday 20 March 2011 until Thursday 24March 2011 AND a pre-Twestival dinner event at Kitaro Japanese Restaurant, Centerpoint, Gadong on Tuesday 22March 2011, where earnings from meals sold at 2 dinner sittings: 5.30pm and 7.30pm will also benefit the fund.

Monies raised will go towards the purchase of developmental toys, teaching aids and equipments for the children who undertake therapy at the CDC. A portion of it will also be used for the CDC's World Down Syndrome Day in April 2011.

The official launch of Twestival Brunei will happen on Thursday 24 March 2011 at Swensens, The Mall, Gadong from 7.30pm, to 9.30pm. The evening will be packed with fun events and where anyone who would like to come along and meet other Twitter users.

So, as many of you may have known, UBD FM is organising a charity event for SMARTER Brunei. The UBDfm SMARTER Race and Bazaar will be a fun-filled three day happening from the 25th to the 27th of March 2011.

Through out the event will be bazaars and a myriad of entertaining activities you can enjoy. The peak of the event will definitely be the SMARTER Race, which will be held on the 27th March 2011. Teams of four members will each brace their ways through the challenging obstacles diligently prepared by the student clubs of UBD along with the support of other organizations such as Brunei Darussalam AIDs Council, Katak Hijau and more. There are of course lots of fantastic prizes to be won, sponsored by various major establishments in Brunei Darussalam.

So, mark your calendars and don't miss out on this merriment for a good cause!

But hey! Let's not stop there. There's a lot more happening over the weekend!

On Wednesday, 2nd March 2011, UBDFM hosted a warm welcome to one of the famous Indonesian electro pop duo, ‘Bottlesmoker’ who is currently on their Asian tour. An interview session by our news crew was held with the group prior to a live radio talk on their music career and experiences with two of our DJs, Sylvan and Angel.

The interview session was accompanied with a question and answer session. Some of the questions posed were:

Q: Can you share more about your band?

A: Previously, we were doing electro low tempo but now free tempo is acceptable and in Melaka for music without vocal is easier to sing along to the beats. The Japan electronic ‘I’m Robot and Proud’ has been an inspiration in our music career and encourages us to explore music freely in our own ways.

Before we met , we were doing different music genre but when we were together as a group we were instructed to do Indie pop. However, the application was in instrumental.

Q: Can you tell us about your academic background and how it has influenced your career now?

A: In 2005, we were in college and we have basic academic in broadcasting. So, we did radio work where we would use software to make music. We also made jingles without vocal for

radio music as we were taught on theater of mind as part of our academic course. In 2005-2006, we collected songs and made our album which were distributed and received great responses from our fans. Additional vocals were also featured. In the past, we did collaborate with “tori topeng” as we wanted to do a lot of traditional instrumental that involves mystic sound.

Q: Where will you be going after leaving Brunei?

A: Our next stop will be in China, Hong Kong, Singapore and back to Bandung, Indonesia after we have completed our Asia tour and we are planning to go to Europe next year.

Q: What is your plan for the future?

A: Qui Qui: “I want to be a journalist”. Norbi: “I am hoping to be a radio producer”. Music is for us to express ourselves only. In addition, we will only use cheap toys and a lot of traditional instruments instead of branded ones as instruments for our music. In the future, we might include vocal as well.

Q: What is your first impression of Brunei?

A: Brunei is a relaxing and peaceful country that has great unique entertainment. It is interesting how Brunei maintains its religious principles while being modern as well.

Q: What do you think of UBD FM?

A: We are glad to be invited to UBDFM and Universiti Brunei Darussalam seems to be very organised and clean. As a college radio station, UBDFM is better when compared to other university :)

UBDFM was graced by the presence of a very special UBD Alumni, our very own recording artist - Juju. On the radio's regular segment featuring local artists, 'An Evening With..' DJ Sylvan , Juju talked about her life and love of music.

Recently graduating from UBD, Juju who was a student from Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institue of Educati0n (SHBIE). In the segment interview, Juju talked about her past experiences and memories while studying in UBD. She also talked about her inspirations in music. Like other guests in 'An Evening With...', Juju explained how she indulged into entering Brunei's music industry.

Juju, a cheery young lady, was exceptionally passionate while talking about her music. Having had released various hits on the mainstream and commercial radio in the country, the singer- songwriter talked about her process of music writing and inspirations behind her various songs with Dj Sylvan.

Her humour is abound when talking about her future endeavours, claiming that for the moment, she focuses on her songwriting while she's "happily unemployed".

UBD FM had the pleasure of interviewing three lovely ladies who went to Al-Azhar University in Cairo, and who were sent back to Brunei due to the recent protests that is still going on in the city.

The three ladies are Dayang Nurul Alifah binti Awang Haji Hassan, Siti Mutiah binti Haji Ismail and Hariyanie binti Hj Awang.

Pertemuan dengan Mahasiswi Universiti Al-Azhar

Seluruh dunia telah dikejutkan dengan rusuhan yang melanda Republik Arab Mesir pada 25 January 2011 yang lalu. Rusuhan semakin mengganas dan berlarutan hingga ke awal Februari tahun ini. Dengan serta merta, rakyat Brunei yang berada di Kaherah dengan selamatnya dibawa pulang ke tanah air.

UBD FM amat berbesar hati atas kesudian tiga pelajar Brunei yang belajar di Universiti Al-Azhar untuk datang ditemu-bual pada 8 Febuari yang lalu. Itu adalah satu kesempatan yang baik untuk berkongsi pendapat.

Sebagai saksi keadaan, pada awalnya mereka tidak menyangka bahawa kekacauan di Kaherah menjadi teruk sampai ke tahap itu, di mana pada 28 Febuari dikatakan hari kemarahan rakyat Mesir memuncak tinggi. Pada masa yang sama, kebanyakan pelajar Universiti sedang menduduki peperiksaan Semester. Kekecohan itu membuatkan mereka tidak dapat pergi ke universiti kerana kebanyakan jalan raya tidak dapat dilalui. Mereka juga tidak berani menggunakan jalan raya tersebut kerana mungkin dianggap mengikuti rusuhan itu.

Menurut Dyg Nurul Alifah, pelajar tahun 3 dalam Jurusan Usuluddin Aqidah & Falsafah, “Satu pengalaman yang tidak dapat dilupakan kerana pada kebiasaanya kami hanya menyaksikannya di dalam televisyen.”

Seorang lagi pelajar, Siti Mutiah Binti Haji Ismail, Tahun 3, Jurusan Usuluddin menjelaskan, “Banyak perkara yang di luar jangkaan dapat dilihat semasa rusuhan di mana semua rakyat walaupun ada yang bukan berugama Islam, tetapi semua bersatu untuk menegakkan hak asasi tanpa mengira ugama”.

Akibat perasaan tidak puas hati terhadap kerajaan kerana tiada membawa berubahan, rakyat Mesir bertindak ganas meminta pemerintah Hosni Mubarak untuk meletak jawatan dan berharap ada pemerintah yang lebih baik untuk mengganti pemerintahan kerajaan Hosni Mubarak. Pada pendapat mereka, adalah wajar bagi Presiden Hosni Mubarak untuk letak jawatan dengan serta merta kerana pemerintah perlu mementingkan kesejahteraan rakyat dalam pembangunan negara secara keseluruhan.

Berkata pula seorang pelajar akhir (tahun 4) yang mengambil Jurusan Lughah Arabiah, Haryanie Binti Haji Awang, “Saya merasakan satu pengalaman baru yang tidak pernah disaksikan selama ini. Dengan melihat kejadian in saya bertuah dan merasa bersyukur dengan keamanan Negara Brunei Darussalam yang aman damai di bawah pemerintahan Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Sultan dan Yang Di-Petuan Negara Brunei Darussalam.”

Apabila ditanya mengenai harapan mereka selepas ini, mereka berharap dapat kembali semula ke Mesir dan semoga keadaan di Mesir kembali aman agar mereka dapat menyambung pengajian mereka.

An Evening with Al-Azhar University Students

The global community was shocked by the unprecedented anti-government protests that swept the Arab Republic of Egypt on 25 January 2011 against the rule of President Hosni Mubarak. The Brunei Embassy in Cairo have been evacuating Bruneian students from the country since the riots.

UBD FM has then taken the opportunity to have a sharing session with three of the many Bruneian students who have been sent home under the contingency plan arranged by the Brunei government. The students from Al-Azhar University were interviewed on air on February 8.

Being a witness, initially they did not expect the chaos was going to be that severe. It was said that February 28th was the day when the anger of Egyptians had risen and became uncontrollable. At the same time, most of university students found it hard as they were on the period of semester examination. The chaos did not affect them directly, however it was difficult for them to go to university as most of the roads were blocked by the protestors. It was also dangerous as the police might think they were joining in the protests.

According to Dyg Nurul Alifah, third year student in the Department of Usuluddin Aqidah & Philosophy, "It was an unforgettable experience because we usually only see it on television".

Another student, Siti Mutiah Binti Haji Ismail, also a third year student explained, "I was surprised to see all citizens were united to uphold fundamental rights regardless of religion. It showed how they were really unsatisfied with the imbalance of distribution of wealth done by the government for human and social development of the country".

As a result of dissatisfaction against the government, the citizens forced President Hosni Mubarak to resign and they were hoping for a better change in the government to replace Hosni Mubarak’s regime. In the Bruneian students’ opinion, it is a wise decision for President Hosni Mubarak to resign immediately because the government should be concerned about the welfare of people for the country’s development as a whole.

Haryanie Binti Haji Awang, a final year student (year 4) taking Lughah Arabiah course, also said that, "For me, it’s an unforgettable experience that has never been witnessed over the years. By looking at events, we should say that we Bruneians are fortunate and grateful for the security of Brunei Darussalam that is peaceful under the reign of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Petuan Negara Brunei Darussalam."

When asked about their future expectations, they hope that Egypt will be back as normal so that they could continue their study in Al-Azhar University.

UBD FM went on its search for its new batch of talents on January 19, 2011, by holding auditions and interviews for DJs and crew members.

In addition to the voices that would fill the station's airwaves, the one-day event at the Electronic Teaching Centre (ETC) in UBD was to also discover other talented individuals who had a knack for public relations, IT, design and audio creativity.

A total of 12 hopeful DJs for Malay and English languages showed up after registering previously online while others decided on the day itself to give it a try. But nothing could have prepared them for a panel made up of six RTB DJs seated before them. They tested each applicant and shared their expectations and experiences with them.

While some were turned away due to lack of confidence, others were favoured for their distinct personality and creativity.

In another room, eight newscasters-to-be tried their luck while 16 potential crew members tried their best to prove why they deserve to be a part of UBD FM.

Assistant Head of Marketting, Mohd Jazmi Hj Mohd Hj Kamel pointed out that UBD FM Already has an existing team of 19 DJs which also include two students who are currently studying abroad.

He explained that they go on air when they are back for the holidays. But because very few stay on in their fourth year, he hopes that the audition will be able to snag at least five new DJs.

The 21-year old 2nd year Sociology and Anthropology student pointed out that on top of online advertisements, UBD FM also set up a booth in the Central Lecture Theatre (CLT), even drawing attention to their upcoming auditions using live performances.

Mohd Jazmi said that UBD FM currently has an estimated listenership of 2,000 from those who pick up the frequency in UBD itself as well as those that listen through Internet streaming.

Khalil Kashfi, who is in his third year was in the group when UBD FM first began in 2009. Now, Student Director, he pointed out that they started small and worked with what they had at the time. He was referring to UBD students themselves who are considered a resource that they successfully utilised. "UBD people are very talented," he said with a smile.

As the first Bruneian university-based station, he expressed hope that UBD FM would be able to "go all the way", changing the perception of the university and showing everybody that it too has a fun campus life.

After being shortlisted, successful candidates will be interviewed further before final decisions are made to the new additions to the UBD FM team.

Donate your unwanted but good items for charity!

Give away used-but-good clothes, books, magazines, papers, accessories, shoes, bags, files, etc! We have received a generous number of donations from just a group of UVC members during the first club activity, and are looking forward to more! The donated stuff will be sorted on the day itself.

You can also buy stuff other people have donated! "One's rubbish is another one's treasure" :) All proceeds will go to SMARTER Brunei. So help us out to help them out!
